| Narayana Nethralaya Stem Cell Research Laboratory (NNSCRL) is being established in Narayana Health City as the Karnataka’s First Ocular Stem Cell Research Laboratory. |
| This research center is started on September 5th 2007 officially with complete SOPs approved and signed for Limbal ex vivo culture. Standardizations and marker confirmation challenged a lot for more than eight months and at the end of one-year completion we have started limbal stem cell transplantation successfully. |
| Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency(LSCD): |
| Limbal stem cells being the source of newly generated corneal epithelial cells, any exogenous insult or a change in their microenvironment (niche) will cause severe derangement of ocular surface called limbal stem cell deficiency. |
| Diagnosis of LSCD: |
| The diagnosis is based on the history and clinical signs, followed by laboratory tests like impression cytology, and histopathology of the pannus. Impression cytology can detect presence of goblet cells on the cornea and it can be used to perform immunohistochemistry for different markers. |
| Limbal Stem Cells Transplantation: |
| Kenyon and Tseng in1989 carried out first limbal transplant in human. The methods of limbal stem cells transplant have under gone remarkable change in last decade. |
| Limbal Stem Cell Culture: |
| Ex vivo culture of limbal tissue is carried out in our Grade “B” clean room using amniotic membrane as the substrate. Autologous serum is used. |
| This bio engineered cell sheet is transplanted to patient and followed |
| Our current project include: development of xeno free culture system for Limbal and Conjunctival culture, development of artificial substrate as an alternative to amniotic membrane, Autologous oral mucosal culture, cardiomyocyte culture, study of plasticity of Mesenchymal Stem Cells. |

| Articular cartilage is frequently damaged as a result of trauma and degenerative joint diseases that may be driven by changes in biomechanics, cytokines, growth factors and cellular responses. Cartilage has no blood vessels; it is not innervated and normal mechanisms of tissue repair, involving the recruitment of cells to the site of damage, do not occur. The challenge for cartilage tissue engineering is to produce cartilage tissue with suitable structure and properties ex vivo, which can be implanted into joints to provide a natural repair that with time will become integrated with the patient's tissues. |

| Pilot Study on Catrtilage Stem Cells: |
| Our initial studies are focused on human articular chondrocytes, their expansion in monolayer culture under differing conditions and their subsequent potential to re-express a full matrix-producing phenotype. This project is being done in collaboration with orthopedics department of SPARSH hospital. |

| NNSCRL is being established based on the National Guidelines for Stem Cell Research and Therapy laid down by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Our research team has formed multidisciplinary body of institutional level review and monitoring board IC-SCRT to evaluate ethical, social and legal issues of permissible area of research. NNSCRL meet current standards of GLP/GTP/GMP with appropriate SOPs. |

| Tour of our research lab: |
| Our center is designed in such a way, which can avoid risk of contamination from external environment. Our office area comprises of a Lab director office on one end and a primary change room on the other end with QC lab entrance. |

| Quality Assurance & Control Lab: |

| Core Processing Lab: |
| In this five-chambered GMP facility, all aspects of processing and quality control, concept of self-inspection is followed. This is designed with separate entry and exit and these change rooms to clean room are clearly demarcated into black, gray and white rooms with different levels of activity and air cleanliness. |

| Grade “B” Class 10,000 Clean Room: |
| All projects carried out in this area are registered with (Institutional Committee for Stem Cell Research and Therapy)IC-SCRT and NAC-SCRT (National Apex Committee for Stem Cell Research and Therapy). Our facility meets requirement for all our national funding agencies like DST/DBT/ICMR and international collaborative agencies too. |

| HAM primarily functions as a biological contact lens. It may be also used as a filter for closing corneal perforations. It is believed to be non immunogenic and antibodies and cell mediated immunity are not been demonstrated. |

| In our research lab we do prepare amniotic membrane by Ang et al methodology using nitro cellulose membrane as a supporting material. At present the serology is done twice in three months interval to screen the incubation period before we release our membrane. We are looking for nucleic acid testing in near future. These membranes are available in 2.5*2.5,2.5*3.5,2.5*5.0 cm sizes. |
