| The prevalence of childhood blindness in India is estimated to be 0.5 per 1,000 children, and up to about 1.1 per 1,000 children in other poor countries. According to some population based studies in India, the main causes of childhood blindness are congenital and inherited eye diseases. In addition to a significant strain to the family and affected child, childhood blindness contributes to loss of productivity and accounts for more than 25% of the economic burden of blindness in India. |
