In the past year and a half we have conducted 55 Surgical Camps for the underprivilaged. At these camps we have screened 22,911 patients, performed surgeries on 2344 patients and dispensed spectacles to 7916 patients. In addition to free cataract surgeries, these camps offer other ocular surgeries and medical treatment to these patients.

The Andhra Pradesh Eye disease Study (APEDS), a recent population-based study on various aspects of blindness, including the prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment, prevalence of and risk factors for major eye diseases, and many other aspects, recommends the following actions for Availability and accessibility of eye-care services in rural areas:

• Widespread experiments to provide good-quality and sustainable eye-care services in rural underserved areas.
• Increase in the "outreach" activity. (targeted at those living in the rural areas and those belonging to lower socioeconomic strata in urban populations)
• "School-screening programmes" and other school-aged children though "outreach" activities in the community.
• Active eye-health promotion activities in the community.
