Well trained corneal surgeons provide “cutting edge” treatment for most corneal disorders. Modern innovations in keratoplasty like DALK and DSAEK for corneal endothelial disorders are being performed at our centre. Intacs® and Corneal Collagen cross linking are being done here to manage hitherto difficult disorders like Keratoconus, Pellucid Marginal Degeneration, and post-LASIK ectasia. The “Dr. Rajkumar Eye Bank” affiliated to the Eye Bank Association of India, has done commendable work in eye banking and eye donation awareness. The refractive surgery service (for eliminating the need for glasses) utilizes a combination of incisional and top of the line LASIK machines linked to wavefront and Pentacam analyzers to deliver optimal patient satisfaction. Advanced ocular surface disorders can now be treated with Amniotic Membrane Transplantation, Stem Cell Transplantation, Cultivated Oral Mucosal Epithelial Transplantation (COMET) where our consultants have considerable expertise.
In keeping with its history of being one of the first centres to introduce the latest in the field of corneal diseases, the department of Cornea and Refractive Surgery has in the last years continued to attain considerable strides.
The department entered into a tie up with the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) to perform research in “Proteomics” of the tear film in an attempt to locate biomarkers in various corneal disorders. A team of doctors from the department received recognition at the prestigious World Cornea Congress (Boston, April 2010) where they presented two papers and four posters. The consultants here perform all the latest available corneal and refractive surgeries including Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty, Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty, ICL’s, Toric ICL’s, Oculink guided surface ablation for residual astigmatism and pterygium excision with conjunctival autografts/with Mitomycin C + amniotic membrane grafting. Dr. Yathish Shivanna, one of our consultants trained in keratoprosthesis surgery at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, Los Angeles, USA. The department now offers the option of Boston Keratoprosthesis in cases of multiple failed grafts, etc. |

| The Cornea fellowship programme is one of the few in the country that offers hands on experience in INTACs, IEKs etc. besides training the fellows in all the basic surgeries and use of equipment such as Pentacam, Orbscan, specular microscopy, ORA and anterior segment OCT, confocal, SD – OCT..etc |
